Bilingual Receptionist Position

Social Justice Collaborative (known as SJC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit legal services organization based in Oakland. We focus on serving low-income immigrants in their deportation cases. SJC is looking for a receptionist who can interface with our clients, members of the court, our colleagues, and key stakeholders such as therapists, social workers, case managers and members of law enforcement.

The work of a receptionist is critical to the effective functioning of our organization and the receptionist acts as the glue between many jobs and tasks. The work that we do is intense and stressful but all our staff share a commitment to our service oriented mission. We pride ourselves on a collegial and fun atmosphere while we do some of the hardest work for people in the worst times of their lives.

This is a full-time position in our Oakland office in Jack London Square. Hours are weekdays 8:30-5:30, with limited need to be later on special occasions.

Skills We Need

  • Fluency in Spanish and English, both written and spoken essential
  • Excellent communication skills, including assertive phone skills
  • Attention to detail; exceptional organization
  • Computer literacy; ability to adapt to new computer software and learn
  • Ability to multi-task

Overview of Main Duties

  • Schedule consultations and appointments with potential and current clients
  • Warmly greet new and current clients
  • Answer a multi-line phone system and transfer calls
  • Daily phone reminders about appointments and court/interview dates
  • Listen to and return voice messages in a timely manner
  • Facilitate information as a liaison between SJC staff and clients
  • Accept payments and prepare deposits coordinating with bookkeeper
  • Manage overdue payments and payment changes
  • Organize and manage supply stock for office use
  • Prepare and send weekly mailings to staff
  • Provide administrative support to staff and attorneys on various projects

  • DOE, commensurate with experience
