Positions & Duties 

Salary Information

The annual salary range for Wastewater Mechanic I is $67,142.40 – $81,640.00, hourly range is $32.28 – $39.25.

The annual salary range for Wastewater Mechanic II is $74,360.00 – $90,625.60, hourly range is $35.75 – $43.57.

The City’s Environmental Services Department (ESD) is seeking individuals whose values align with the values of the City’s employees to fill the vacancies of Wastewater Mechanics for the Maintenance Division and the Energy and Automation Division.

Wastewater Mechanic – Maintenance Division

The Wastewater Mechanics for the Maintenance Division are responsible for a large variety of repairing, rebuilding, overhauling and preventative maintenance of the Facility’s industrial wastewater and mechanical equipment to high standards of performance and reliability, located above and below ground including some machinery housed in various buildings. Applicants should be well versed in the inspection, testing, troubleshooting, dismantling, installing, repairing, and overhauling of industrial equipment. This is a diverse workgroup with many different skill sets to include carpentry, welding, metal fabrication, rigging, excavation, fluid pipping systems, and compressed air systems. The Maintenance Division is comprised of four groups working as a team to provide consistent reliable wastewater treatment for the seven cities we service.

Wastewater Mechanics in the Maintenance team also perform the following but not limited to:

◦Preventive maintenance and inspections of all industrial equipment on site, below ground, and in remote areas. ◦Inspections, repairs, and overhauls of industrial wastewater equipment. ◦Inspections, repairs, and installations of our collection and distribution piping system. ◦Excavations, shoring, and confine space entry work. ◦Interpret drawings, service manuals, and part manuals. ◦Operations of aerial man lifts, industrial forklifts, industrial vacuum truck and other equipment. ◦Perform various metal fabrication, welding processes (such as arc, tig, and mig). ◦Operations associated with bridge cranes, mobile cranes, hoists, chain falls, and rigging. ◦Operations associated with shop equipment drill presses, iron worker, band saws, pedestal grinders, hydraulic shear, and brake. ◦Attend all safety trainings.

Wastewater Mechanic – Energy and Automation Division

The Wastewater Mechanics (also known as Co-Gen Operator/Mechanic) that reside in the Energy and Automation Division are responsible for operating, maintaining and overhauling the Facility’s industrial mechanical and electrical equipment related to large stationary diesel-ignited/spark-ignited engine driven blowers and/or power generators, gas compressors and gas storage such as commonly found in municipal power plants, natural gas pipeline compressor stations and large marine propulsion systems. This team provides 24/7 staffing and are assigned to rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays. The Wastewater Mechanics (Co-Gen Operator/Mechanics) often work in teams of two while performing preventative maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on Facility equipment. Applicants for this position must be available to work nights, weekend and holidays.

The Co-Gen Operator/Mechanics also perform the following but not limited to:

◦Preventive maintenance and inspections of all equipment in the Power and Air (P&A) section. ◦Use precision measuring tools, granite table, non destructive testing, Prussian blue, polishing stones, fitting bearings to shafts. ◦Various welding disciplines (such as arc, tig, mig) as well as oxy-acetylene and plasma/carbon arc cutting. ◦Fabrication of specialty tools, obsolete engine parts, and fixtures. ◦Operate bridge cranes, chain falls, lever hoists and all associated rigging. ◦Interpret drawings, service manuals and parts manuals. ◦Operate seat grinder, valve grinder, drill press, band saw, vertical mill, engine lathe, iron worker, sheet metal brake and surface grinder as well as forklift and man lift. ◦Repair, and inspection of low and high pressure-piping systems. ◦Work with electricians, instrumentation technicians, painters, HVAC and other mechanics ◦Attend all safety trainings.

Physical Requirements

◦Duties require a heavy level of physical exertion, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. ◦Incumbents may be required to utilize self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment, which requires the ability to pass an annual fit and spirometry test. ◦Ability to perform the essential physical functions of this position will be determined by a post-offer medical examination conducted by City of San Jose Employee Health Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Wastewater Mechanic I

1.  Education:  Successful completion of high school, General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

2.   Experience:  Two (2) years journey level experience as a mechanic in hydraulics, wastewater treatment or closely related industry;

OR Two (2) years journey level experience as a mechanic in operation, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of mechanical and electrical equipment related to large stationary diesel and spark-ignited engines and/or power generators;

OR Four (4) years of experience assisting Wastewater Mechanics in the maintenance and repair of wastewater equipment at a level equivalent to Wastewater Attendant or Assistant Heavy Diesel Equipment Operator/Mechanic with the City of San José.

Wastewater Mechanic II

1.   Education:  Successful completion of high school, General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

2.   Experience:  Two (2) years journey level experience as a mechanic in hydraulics, wastewater treatment or closely related industry;

OR Two (2) years journey level experience as a mechanic in operation, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of mechanical and electrical equipment related to large stationary diesel and spark-ignited engines and/or power generators;

OR Four (4) years of experience assisting Wastewater Mechanics in the maintenance and repair of wastewater equipment at a level equivalent to Wastewater Attendant or Assistant Heavy Diesel Equipment Operator/Mechanic with the City of San José.

AND certification as Plant Mechanical Technologist Grade II from California Water Environment Association (CWEA) or equivalent.

3. Acceptable Substitution: Two (2) years of experience as a Wastewater Mechanic I may be substituted for the certification as Plant Mechanical Technologist Grade II.

Additional Requirements for Each Level

Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver’s license. As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver’s license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
